Sam Taylor-Johnson will not be returning to direct the planned Fifty Shades of Grey sequels. The announcement was made earlier today on Deadline, with the following statement from the director:

“Directing Fifty Shades of Grey has been an intense and incredible journey for which I am hugely grateful. I have Universal to thank for that. I forged close and lasting relationships with the cast, producers, and crew and most especially with Dakota and Jamie. While I will not be returning to direct the sequels, I wish nothing but success to whosoever takes on the exciting challenges of films two and three”.

Taylor-Johnson’s big screen adaptation of the popular erotic novel made approximately $558.6 million worldwide and was on top of everyone’s radars for months. The film was based on E.L. James’ best-seller about a sexually reserved and shy college student that meets 27-year-old billionaire Christian Grey and falls into a whirlwind passionate affair with him.

The film is going to be hitting your favorite Video on Demand and streaming services in the next few months, and an unrated version has been announced a few days ago.
